We had a wonderful two week vacation in Scotland, England and Iceland in late June and early July 2014. We experienced the history and green countryside by plane, auto, train, bus. limo and walking. This was our first time on the trains and would recommend the trip from Glasgow to Newcastle to London and back to Edinburgh. We paticularly enjoyed the walking tours in London (part of London Pass) and the hop on hop off tour in Edinburgh. I really enjoyed my half day at the Churchill War Room Museum while my traveling companions went shopping at Harrod's. Iceland has a lot of natural beauty and we enjoyed the Golden Circle luxury coach tour even though it rained most of the day. Icealnd is worth a stop even though Reykjavik is a more expensive city than London.
Our travel company rented for us a two bedroom apartment at Vauxhall for a week. This was a wonderful location as it was right across the street from a Tube station and walking distance to Westminster Abbey. We had a few issues with the property manager not having the apartment ready and clean ontime, and several things needing maintenance during the week. Our travel agency worked quickly to try to fix these issues, but nevertheless these added some hassles to our trip. We also had two tour voucher mistakes from the agency that were corrected qiuckly, but caused delays in two of our days. Our other accomadations and tours were four star, as requested, and met our expectations.
As noted above, we enjoyed the walking tour and commentary of Central London's historical sites around Trafalgar Square and a second tour that showed us the "Changing of the Guards" from four different viewpoints (quick moving but worth it!). Our bus tours of Canterbury, Stonehenge and Bath were a good first overview and we would return to these areas on another trip. We really enjoyed our night at "Jersey Boys". We will always remember our "Climb over the Top at the O2", but it does not compare to the Syndey Bridge Climb. We spent two days driving on the " wrong side" in Northumberland and enjoyed the Alnwick Castle and Vindolanda Roman Ruins at Hadrains Wall. England is all about History -- Kings, Queens, Dukes, Duchesses and the Royal Family, so a little pretrip study helps get it all in perpective.
We probably crammed too much into the 15 days and we should have had one or two down days. We were very tired by the time we got to Iceland. We would have liked to have spent a day or two around Bath.
