We were three couples with extensive travel experience. This travel agent and her company rank at the top of the travel agencies we have used. Our agent is a Dubrovnik resident and very knowledgeable about local matters. Thus, she provided great insight and suggestions regarding our itinerary. Importantly, she was also very responsive to all of our pre- trip inquiries. Once we had our basic plans, our agent made us reservations at the best hotels and restaurants, obtained excellent drivers and transportation, engaged terrific guides, and arranged special events we will never forget. While we were on our trip, our travel agent stayed in contact with our guides to ensure that everything was going well, and she even met us when we arrived in Dubrovnik. Our trip can be broken into three parts. We began in Istria. There, the hotel in Rovinj is one of the nicest in Europe. It could be a destination itself. We toured the country-side with olive groves, vineyards, and charming villages. Truffle hunting was also special experience in area. We then traveled to Split and after a couple of days there, boarded our private catamaran for a week's tour of the islands. Our boat was new, clean, and large enough for six. The captain and hostess were great. This was great fun; the sea and the islands are beautiful. But we had two days of bad weather. Our boat captain told me that our travel agent contacted him to provide alternative experiences for us during that time at no expense to us. He stated that he had never dealt with a travel agent so willing to put the customer's interest ahead of her own. The last part of the trip was in Dubrovnik, with a day trip to Montenegro. Once again, the hotel and the restaurant reservations our agent arranged were wonderful. Throughout the transportation was in new, comfortable vehicles, and the drivers and guides spoke good English, were very knowledgeable, and quite friendly. Our travel agent took care of every detail and it was clear to us that she genuinely cared that our trip took place seamlessly.
Because we loved it all, it is hard to pinpoint the best parts. Wine tasting and lunch at Bibich Winery outside of Split was certainly special. We have done wine tastings all over Europe, but the experience here was unlike all others. T anhe food was such high cuisine that I considered it exotic- just wonderful, as was the wine. Similarly, the lunch at the oyster farm in Ston was to die for. The best oysters in the world. Oysters, Mussels, wine, grappa in a neat outdoor setting. In the same vein, a visit to a family olive farm and lunch at the farm in Montenegro was memorable. Of course, we loved Dubrovnik, who doesn't? But, I personally just loved traveling among the islands on our own boat the most. The beauty, relaxation when desired, activity when desired, food and drink are beyond description.
I would probably not try to crowd so much into each day and then try to dine a good restaurants at the end of the day. There is just not enough time in a day to see and do everything. I would cut back on restaurant reservations and just grab a casual bite at the end of a long day of sight-seeing. In Istria, I would spend more time in Rovinj and less in Pula. If I had limited time, I would spend it touring the islands, with a short time in Dubrovnik.
