Our travel agent was so responsive and friendly! He was eager to help us and EXTREMELY organized. Every document we needed was included. His network of other agents were also very helpful in wanting to make our trip a memorable and enjoyable one. I had a fall in Mykonos and his staff there and in Santorini when I arrived were extremely attentive and ready to take me to the doctor or attend to whatever I needed. That was much appreciated and helpful. We did not feel alone. It was very helpful to have someone meet us at every entry and go over the schedule. This was my third trip to Greece, but it was YEARS ago for the other trips and it was my husband's first trip. We wanted to have a relaxing time, but also experience the historical sites and what made each island unique. As this was a very short trip (6 nights), we probably had less "downtime" than we might have wanted because we were also very eager to see the interesting things our agent suggested.
The visit to Akrotiri combined with the wine tour of 3 vineyards on Santorini was a highlight for us. It was the BEST wine tour I've ever gone on because the young man who led it was so enthusiastic about explaining his wines -- the 3 vineyards each had unique features -- and I loved the food pairings and his explanations of the effect of the foods on the wines we tasted. Our group was small and we all got along and had fun with our guide. He is to be commended. Akrotiri is a treasure and our guide there was also enthusiastic about explaining the significance of this ancient Minoan town. Definitely worth a visit. We also loved the catamaran tour in Santorini in spite of the fact that the winds and wave swells prohibited us from visiting some of the beaches that are normally visited on the trip. However, the captain and all the crew were so affable and accommodating we don't feel as if we missed a thing. Finally, we'd like to commend our tour leader for our private tour in Greece. He, too, was extremely eager to share the history of Athens and I so appreciated learning Athen's history without just focusing on its 6th c BCE era. He had so many details. And, when he found out we were Jewish, he made an effort to point out sites and history that would be of special interest to us. He was a great guide!
Have more free time to wander around. Of course this probably means having a longer trip so I don't view this as a complaint. That's the main thing, but it really may have been unavoidable given the activities we wanted to do. I also would have preferred a less populated beach area in Mykonos. The hotel itself was excellent. It did not have its own beach access, so it would have been necessary to rent a chair from someone else if we wanted to spend the day sunbathing at the sea with a lounge chair; however, since we really didn't have that much time to do that, it turned out just fine. I don't know about the hotels in Mykonos or the other beaches to know if it is different elsewhere. One advantage perhaps of this beach area is that it's easy to get to and close to town. I just would have preferred a more quiet area. Again, I don't know how far it is to get to town from other beaches. Now that I've visited the two most popular Greek islands -- Mykonos and Santorini, on a return trip I'd choose a less populated island in addition to wanting to visit Crete. I also would love to go to northern Greece to see Thessaloniki and the cultural differences there. I'm not saying I would have changed this trip's agenda because we wanted to see these two islands.
