The actual overall rating should be a 4.5.
Everything was great, and better than expected except the following. One of the recommended restaurants was not very good in terms of the food that was served. It was also a good distance from where we were staying and hard to find. The guide selected for Munich did not live up to expectations. On the one hand, she took me on a great bicycle tour of the English gardens. On the other hand, she left me sitting for 40 minutes by myself at the Schatz Kammer, with the result that I did not get to see the Frauen Kirche, which was for me one of the top sites. Finally, with all the materials they provided (which was perhaps a little too much, as it was a bit overwhelming), we would have appreciated a simple map (Google print out) of where the hotels and the restaurants where we had reservations were located.
Other issues, which may not have been under the travel company's control, were the car's GPS, which was not up-to-date and/or had strange settings, with the result that we were given incorrect driving instructions or went off in strange directions from time to time. The GPS also shut down entirely on the last day. In addition, the car's speedtronic system kept malfunctioning (the car would drop out of gear and it was difficult to get it back). The travel company did take our concerns about this seriously and arranged for us to have the car examined at a Mercedes dealer that was on the way. This was all done quickly and efficiently. And, the car functioned better after the adjustment, but not for long. The problem resurfaced on the way to our last destination.
Other than these few issues, everything was perfect. We especially appreciated having someone pick us up and take us to our hotel from the airport and train stations. They were always on time, very polite and helpful.
It was all lovely - the skyline in Dresden walking back to the hotel under a full moon was stunning. Nuremberg was beautiful and full of history. The guided tour of the Neuschwantstein Castle was fantastic (though it was a challenge to arrive so early). The winery/hotel we stayed at in the Palatinate region was also outstanding. The people were very helpful, the setting was lovely, and the wines were great. Dinner at the Rhine hotel was also memorable, with its lovely setting and unmatched views of the Rhine.
Try to be better prepared for all of the many sites and opportunities that were available.
