The trip was an amazing journey. We were able to travel across Italy and experience so many different aspects of the culture. The travel company was a little difficult to deal with. I felt that the travel agent wasn't fully listening to what I was asking for and in the end the trip was more stressful than it should have been for the price we paid. There were several times when we were sprinting to catch a connecting train or left stranded without a gps/map to get us to our next destination. These are just little details that made a huge impact on our trip. While we did enjoy our time spent in these beautiful cities, the time spent traveling was way more stressful than I would have expected. I'm certain it would have been less stressful had I planned the traveling myself because I would have put in the extra effort to be sure I covered every detail of the trip. After an email exchange with the travel agent he informed me that he normally goes over every detail with each client before the trip but he "forgot" to follow through with this for our trip, which seems like the most important aspect of any trip. I was extremely disappointed with this travel agent and would not use this company again nor would I recommend using this company for anything more than simple tours.
We really enjoyed all of the tours we took part in including the Grand Canal tour in Venice, wine tour in Tuscany, Vatican tour and ancient Rome tour in Rome and the Capri boat tour when in Sorrento. Each one of these tours was lead by very knowledgable individuals and was a great time overall!
I would have planned most of it myself. I found that the travel agent was useful for booking the awesome tours we went on but not super useful for making our travel arrangements. There were too many instances where we almost missed trains or were completely lost because the trip was not planned properly. Now that I know a bit more about Europe I think I would feel most comfortable planning the traveling myself and leaving the touring aspect to the professionals.
Travel Company's Comments
The only time the client might have had less than the usual afforded time was their first train from Rome to Venice. Please note that the traveler was arriving from their International flight this same day and then taking a 3 1/2 hour train to Venice, so I did not want them waiting longer than necessary at the train station. If the flight was delayed or maybe baggage took longer than anticipated, or they were held up at Customs, I cannot say. They should have not had a problem making their train, and the worse case scenario is they would have used the same tickets for the next train. They made their train.
I never “forgot" to go over every detail with the client. If this was an email exchange as claimed, I would love to see it. We insist on going over documents with our clients before their departure, and we did for this trip as well.
We offer the option of having a GPS sent to clients renting a car before their trip which includes return mailing materials as well. This client did not take advantage of this service. Many other travelers use various Map apps on their phones and iPads.
We were communicating with this client throughout the trip, and the feedback was always positive. Thus, I was very surprised to read the criticism.
Please note the clients never missed or were late for a train or other appointment throughout their trip.
