Our Italy travel agency prepared a tour for us that can only be called amazing. Hillary listened carefully to what we wanted and designed a package that included everything. Each hotel provided a unique experience and seemed careful chosen for us. In Venice we stayed in a renovated palace which was elegant and fresh, not to mention located next to St. Mark's Square...how convenient is that! The tour of the Ghetto was fascinating and allowed us to see something rarely seen by American tourists. Timing did mean we had to forgo the Doge's Palace but we all agreed it was worth it. The only minor complaint is that it would have been useful if the agency had provided us with directions to the Ghetto...Venice is so hard to navigate and we really got lost.
Florence was amazing. The hotel was an old, in town, home that the family had renovated into a hotel furnished with their antiques. The service was superb. When they learned it was our daughter's 22nd birthday they left a cake in the room and a gift card to a restaurant. The small group tours arranged for the galleries were excellent. The guide was trained in art history so she was able to give us insight into the art. Here stories about the artists and the artwork kept us all enthralled and even helped make the galleries interesting for the one of us who is blind. For our trip to Tuscany what can be said of the agency's employee who took us into the region. He was informative and helpful. Our stop in Sangiovese and at a small roadside tasting house was unexpected but so great! He gave us a choice of wineries and we did love the one we selected.
Rome was fun, hip and cool. Our boutique hotel was in a great location, however, the rooms were really small, almost to the point of being uncomfortable. There was barely room for our luggage. The small group tour to the Coliseum and the ruins was truly interested. It was no one's fault but the place was jammed and the tour leader had trouble keeping track of 23 tourists in the crush of the masses. All that was paled by the private tour arranged for us at the Vatican. Our guide was knowledgeable in art, Catholic history, and archeology. I felt so well educated when we left. Anyone going to Rome with this must have them arrange the food tasting tour! What fun and learning about food in Rome very valuable.
On to Positino on the Almalfi Coast, where we had a great hotel on the beach. The day long trip to the Isle of Capri was fun, and we loved just being told about the isle and being set free to explore and hike. On the boat the Captain took us to a variety of sites and we all had fun...The twentysomethings even went for a swim! What a gift to have our last day in Italy free to do what we wanted. We rented a motorcycle and our son and his dad explored the Almafi coast, while our daughter and I took a cooking class.
I cannot rate this agency highly enough...I only wish I had more stars!
