My (now) wife and I initially considered trying to map out our honeymoon trip across Greece on our own, but ultimately decided to give Zicasso and the travel agency a chance – and this was the best decision we ever made!
We submitted some initial information on the website, not knowing really much of anything other than that we wanted a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and promptly were set up with two experienced travel agencies from Greece. Within days, both of the agencies contacted us –the system is set up this way so that you can talk to both and choose which one you like the best. We went with a cordial gentleman of this travel agency who was good at speaking English and very open to meeting our specific requests. He’s a very experienced travel expert in Greece and has been coming up with travel plans for decades. Based on the initial information we submitted, he drew up an initial general outline itinerary for us. He then gave us a call, and we spent time making adjustments so that it could fit our wants. Our travel specialist is very flexible – and you never have to feel like you’re locked in. We went back and forth several times, changing our minds every so often, adjusting things here and there (activities, accommodations, you name it) before we came to a finalized itinerary that we were happy about.
It seems like the departments in Zicasso are interconnected, so we were also set up with people who were able to set us up with the appropriate flights at the timeframes of our request. We asked him questions related to tipping culture and the use of cash vs. credit card in Greece, and he answered all of those questions for us. He also informed us about necessary documents needed before traveling to Greece and also had us fill out various forms and submit them beforehand so that we wouldn’t have to be scrambling before our activities in Greece.
The biggest thing, however, is when you land in Greece. That’s when the travel agencies really shine, and that’s when everything becomes worth it. At every landing point there was a driver waiting for us, ready to connect us to the next location, and who was knowledgeable about the area. Representatives met us at every location (we went to various islands, and there appeared to be different local expert travel specialists per island – but overseeing everything was our travel specialist), filling us in on important information such as suggestions on what to do and where to go and at what time – and they told us about the local area, in case we wanted to do things on our own. We are just regular people, but everything was set up so that we felt like royalty. Everything was truly catered to make our trip as seamless as possible. After all of the busy wedding planning, it was so nice to just go and relax and have everything taken care of. It’s still surreal thinking about it.
When we arrived at our first hotel, we received a folder that had all of the information for our trip and the various tickets we would need for our time in Greece. Our travel specialist checked in on us throughout our time in Greece and was always available to answer any questions. When a yacht activity got canceled due to poor weather, he somehow immediately knew about it and within hours had it rescheduled for a different day that was available in our itinerary (which he already knew). He set us up with the required COVID testing before we returned to our home country, giving us options to go offsite or (because it was available at our location) have the doctor actually come to our hotel (though more costly, we opted to have the doctor meet us at the hotel and it’s worth it to avoid the stress/wait times). I don’t know how he did it, but he also somehow got us upgraded accommodations, better than what we had originally requested, making our stays even more awesome.
We had a wonderful time. It was more than just a honeymoon vacation – it was also a very cool learning experience where we learned so much about the country’s history from the various tour guides.
There are so many memorable parts that it’s impossible to pick one, so we’ll list a few. In Athens, we took a tour of the Acropolis – and our tour guide must have been some Greek History Ph.D. or something because her knowledge was just incredible. When there was time left over, we asked her for suggestions on where we could buy Greek souvenirs. She walked us to various locations, including a wine seller (who seemed to open the shop just for us), and also a cool place that sells Greek-made items only. Very helpful!
In Crete, we spent some days in Old Town Chania. It’s a beautiful part of Crete where you can walk out of your hotel into a pier with restaurants and stores. There is a lot to explore around the greater area as well, all within walking distance. We also had good local travel representatives from another tour agency. The travel vans always had bottles of water and sanitized hand towels in them (which was nice). We found out that our driver was a native of Crete and had like 300 olive trees – it was fun talking with him and our tour guides. During our time in Crete, we also went on a tour where we visited a famous Cretan artist and had a meal at the top of a mountain by Greek grandmothers. Our tour guide used our names to find similar sounding Greek names for us, which was fun, so now we have Greek names which we call each other even when we came back home. We also went on a food tour of Chania, and saw the different parts of the city and learned about the city's history - this was very helpful in learning about the area, and also for when we later wanted to buy souvenirs and gifts. When it was time to leave Chania, our driver took us to the city of Heraklion and given our short stay we had only a day to explore Heraklion. He told us to check out the local museum and a local restaurant – and both turned out to be amazing and perfect for the amount of time we had. All of the tours we had in Crete were great – there was so much unexpected history that we learned.
In Santorini, we were in the most beautiful accommodations we’d ever been in our lives, in Oia, thanks to the upgrade by our travel specialist. Straight up surreal. Cameras can’t really capture the breathtaking view. In Santorini, we saw some beautiful sunsets. Our hotel helped make dinner reservations for us (and they even knew the sunset times). The hotel got us some of the best seats in the restaurants because we would show up and would be led to a table that had an incredible view of the sunset. We went on a catamaran sailing trip, which was pretty fun. The catamaran made a few stops where we could go and swim in the beautiful sea and ended with a beautiful view of the sunset. We also did the caldera hike (which is a hike around the beautiful island overlooking the sea). It’s worth it and not too physically demanding – the guide takes a very reasonable pace. There is a restaurant which has the best gyros you will ever eat in your life.
In Mykonos, we’ll remember strolling around Mykonos Town. It’s a fun town where you can just stroll around and pass the time.
We will also remember all of the interesting food items we tried. We made a concerted effort to only focus on eating Greek foods in our time there. We ate tons of Greek salad (tomatoes are just better in Greece). Tons of Greek yogurt, which is also better in Greece. We loved the Loukoumades dessert (donut balls glazed with honey, sometimes with nuts, cinnamon(?), and ice cream). A lot of Greek coffee (all sorts of coffee for that matter). A lot of gyros and souvlaki. We basically opened up the menu and tried everything that sounded different – and we are glad we did!
