Our trip to Chile was one we had been dreaming about for more than a year and I'm happy to say that it lived up to our expectations.
We flew into Santiago, Chile, and spent a few days doing a tour of the city and the surrounding wine country. Then we flew down to Puntas Arenas and spent five nights in a "luxury yurt" near the Torres Del Paine National Park. We returned to Santiago for a day before flying back home.
We saw some of the most beautiful countryside in the entire world and, while I don't want to say it was entirely easy, I will say that the Chile part of our trip came off without a hitch.
So where did our travel company make the difference for us? In a lot of ways, actually. Our agent set up all our domestic flights (no small task when trying to align with international flights) as well as all the connections to and from the airports and hotels. The city tour and trip to the wine country all came from this company and were private tours too — a luxury that I don't think we were expecting.
We decided not to stick with one of the existing tour packages they had setup, since we became so enamored with the idea of the Patagonia camp, but they were extremely accommodating building us a trip around what we wanted and within our budget.
Any time we had a question or needed someone to be a liaison with someone in Chile, our agent took care of it for us. Looking back in my inbox, I can count more than 60 emails back and forth between us. We were really, really impressed with the level of service.
Two moments stand out for me in our Chile trip:
Obviously, I wish we could have stayed longer. International travel is always such a tribulation, so if we could have had more trip, the days we spent at the airports might have felt like less of a burden. We would have loved to go to the Atacama Desert or Valparaiso as well, but we didn't have the time or money. Just don't stay in Santiago too long — it's a fine city, but it's a city that feels like it could exist almost anywhere. Just go out and see the natural beauty.
