This was our first trip to Argentina or anywhere in South America. We visited 3 areas; Iguazu Falls, El Calafate (southern Patagonia) and Buenos Aires. Overall accommodations and itinerary were very good. Unfortunately, that was somewhat overshadowed by a lack of detailed follow-thru by our travel company's back office. I had to closely monitor the details of our trip during the planning stage as there were a number of clerical errors.
Furthermore, 2 excursions that were included in the itinerary that they provided us were not realized. The wrong tour was arranged on one of the excursions and the starting point of another excursion was not properly communicated to us.
To their credit, our travel company did treat us to a dinner in Buenos Aires at a very nice restaurant due to the mix up and also refunded the appropriate amounts for the unrealized excursions.
We particularly enjoyed the opposite extremes of liquid water at Iguazu Falls and the frozen forms of glaciers and icebergs in southern Patagonia.
Our travel company encouraged us to take the boat ride under the falls which was great advice and well worth it. You are definitely under the falls and get totally drenched. Argentina has done a wonderful job of making the waterfalls viewable from many angles with their extensive walkways.
Using El Calafate as our base, we visited the Perito Moreno Glacier by both boat and the land-based viewing stands and balconies. A large rupture occurred 5 days before we visited, but we were still able to hear and see some calving. Also enjoyed the boat ride the next day to view numerous icebergs from the Upsala Glacier.
The Argentine people were pleasant and helpful. Even with our limited knowledge of Spanish, the locals were always willing to try and help us.
The exchange rate of US$ to Peso was very favorable.
Numerous tasty food options at reasonable prices.
Lastly, we enjoyed our lodging accommodations. In all 3 cities, we stayed in unique/boutique-type properties that our travel company suggested to us.
Spend more time seeing other parts of the country and less time in Buenos Aires.
TRAVEL COMPANY COMMENTS:
To answer to Daniel's comments, we reviewed all the details on his trip with my team and my local suppliers specially with our local supplier in EL CALAFATE since thats where we had more differences.
We really appreciate all this input about your trip so we can make it better next time. Specially in CALAFATE since BUENOS AIRES & IGUAZU worked differently. Maybe also our mistake was not to offer you a private services all the time so we dont have the situation about the language in the transportation.
We had a misunderstanding with our local supplier in EL CALAFATE regarding Estancia Cristina and this doesn't mean that they didn't take the excursion, they couldn't take the excursion as we planned since there are different types of the same excursion. We did reimburse them with different between the DISCOVERY and CLASSIC since they paid for a discovery and we delivered CLASSIC excursion. I would like to personally apologize for this confusion again. I personally talked with the manager of the Estancia but it was impossible to change that at that time.
Regarding the missing of the walking tour in BUENOS AIRES it was certainly a mistake on the itinerary details since it was NOT CLEAR for you and we didn't reconfirm that the day before at your hotel or by email. This is something we had not had any problem before since our local guide picks everybody directly from the hotel but obviously the description was not clear on our end. Of course we agreed on refunding the cost of that tour since it wasnt delivered even that both the client and the guide were there waiting for each other at a different place.
We apologizd to Daniel and offered them a complimentary nice dinner in BUENOS AIRES that we are glad they enjoyed as it's very unfortunate we cannot get them back their time. We are simply glad they enjoyed the trip overall :)
As a business owner I am well aware of the mistake/misunderstanding we had in the itinerary details but I am also glad to read your details and comments with the good experiences too. I do appreciate that since we work hard to make a great trip for you even thou we have to also accept our errors and be there for you as much as we can.
