Detailed Itinerary

Day 1-2: Kaingo Camp, South Luangwa

Description

Welcome to Zambia! Our representative will meet you upon arrival in Lusaka and guide you to your connecting flight to Mfuwe. Once you arrive in Mfuwe you will be met and transferred to Kaingo Camp, in Luangwa, for your first two nights in Africa.

Bordering the Luangwa River, the northern and southern Luangwa National Parks contain some of the most breathtaking and untouched wilderness in Africa. As a result of this and the parks’ successful anti-poaching campaigns, the area has developed into a world-renowned wildlife haven. The South Luangwa National Park is renowned for its walking safari, which allows visitors to view elephant, hippo and even lion close-up under the supervision of professional and knowledgeable armed guides.

Overnight: Kaingo Camp

Kaingo’s relaxed, personal and friendly atmosphere offers its guests fantastic game-viewing opportunities within an area of incredible beauty and varied terrain. The large centrally located open-sided sitting room includes a dining area, library and Kaingo’s renowned thousand year old lead-wood bar. Overlooking the Luangwa River deep within the prime area of the South Luangwa National Park, Kaingo has two king chalets, two twin chalets and two honeymoon suites. Large fly-wired windows provide stunning views of the river; and the complete absence of  generator noise (the camp uses solar power) means nothing but the wheeze-honk of a hippo interferes with the sounds of a lion’s roar, a leopard’s call or the early morning ‘drumming’ of the Ground Hornbill. In addition to the indoor ensuite bathroom, each chalet has a stunning outdoor bathtub with shady views of a pod of hippos. A special feature of Kaingo is the unique individual decks built out over the river in front of each chalet. From this relaxing vantage point guests can view game coming down to drink, basking hippos, aquatic birds, crocodiles fishing, and daily elephant crossings.

Overnights at KAINGO CAMP.

Includes: All meals, local brand drinks, scheduled lodge activities,

Day 3: Tafika Camp, South Luangwa

Description

Continue your safari at the family owned Tafika Camp where you'll have the opportunity to mountain bike, microlight, and see the local village and the camp's community project in addition to game drives and walking.

Overnight: Tafika Camp

Tafika Camp is situated in the northern part of the Nsefu Sector of the South Luangwa National Park in Zambia. It is the base camp for Remote Africa Safaris, a family-run safari operation with a collection of four extremely high-quality safari camps. Tafika provides amazing views of the river offering a wonderful place to relax when not enjoying walking safaris, cycling trails, microlighting, or day & night game drives.

Overnights at TAFIKA CAMP.

Includes: All meals, local brand drinks, scheduled lodge activities

Days 4-7: Chikoko Trails, South Luangwa

Description

Set off from main Tafika Camp on your walking safari to Chikoko Trails where you'll experience the true Zambian wilderness on foot with no vehicles in sight. Your first two nights will be spent at Chikoko Trails Camp before proceeding to Crocodile River Camp where the stylishly rustic accommodation, exceedingly high standards of guiding, and authentic bush experience will leave you with an unending love of the bush.

Overnight: Chikoko Trails and Crocodile River Camp

Slightly upstream from the parent camp Tafika, Chikoko Trails is comprised of two camps: Chikoko Tree Camp and Crocodile River Camp. Both camps are only accessible by foot - a small price to pay for the freedom of a walking wilderness free of roads and cell phones!

Set in a beautiful corner of the valley, in a true wilderness area where there are no roads, these camps have excellent game densities and offer guests a great opportunity to experience the bush on foot in isolated and natural surroundings.

Walk from camp to camp in the remote Eastern Zambia following the animal footpaths. Discover the inner workings of the African bush as the expert Remote African Safaris' guides share their experience and wilderness knowledge.

The route follows the well-worn elephant and hippo trails, not to mention the original footsteps of David Livingstone, through the Luangwa Valley. Here guests - accompanied by an experienced guide, an armed National Park scout and a tea bearer - tread through the African bush alongside the wildlife. It is an experience that is liberating and unforgettable. All luggage and supplies are delivered into the camps. Safari walks typically last three to four hours and this includes a welcome mid-morning tea break. Terrain covered is fairly flat but occasionally uneven.

Overnights at CHIKOKO TRAILS.

Includes: All meals, local brand drinks, scheduled lodge activities.

Days 8-10: Islands of Siankaba, Victoria Falls

Description

Time to see the majestic Victoria Falls. A flight will take you from Mfuwe to Livingstone (via Lusaka), where you'll spend three nights on two private islands in the middle of the Zambezi at Islands of Siankaba. During your stay, take advantage of the many water based activities on offer such as a tour of the Falls, fishing, mokoro trips, village visits, bike riding, and sunset cruises. On September 18th, see the Falls from Livingstone Island and take a dip in the Devil’s Pool.

One of the original natural wonders of the world, the Victoria Falls is breathtaking and not surprisingly a World Heritage Site. Known locally as ‘The Smoke that Thunders’, this spectacle is accessible from both Zambia and Zimbabwe.  Unlike other waterfalls Victoria Falls has a natural catwalk across from the falls which provides for spectacular viewing. During your stay, activities abound; take a dip in Devil’s Pool overlooking the Falls (conditions permitting), elephant back safaris, game drives, absailing, heli-flips, micro light flights and more. You may also wish to take on the mighty Zambezi River with the greatest white water rafting trip on the planet. The rapids on the Zambezi are officially defined as “Grade 5” by the British Canoe Union (Grade 6 being commercially un-run-able)! Hang on for a wild ride as the mighty Zambezi carves its way through one of the great river corridors of the world. This is the domain of the Nyaminyami, the River God of the Tonga people, and is now the highway for exhilarating rafting adventures.

LIVINGSTONE ISLAND

Dr. David Livingstone was paddled in a dugout canoe through swift rapids towards the roar and rising cloud of mist suspended above a cliff over which the whole of the Zambezi River plunged. The Makololo paddlers skillfully landed him on ‘Goat Island’ (now Livingstone Island) right on the lip of the chasm. A few steps through the small rain forest and, on the 16th November 1855, he gazed upon one of the most spectacular sights in the world – ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’ (The Smoke that Thunders) which he named after his Queen as The Victoria Falls.

Today visitors are picked up in a twin engine boat with powerful motors and a skilled skipper re-traces Livingstone’s approach to the island to witness the very best view of the Falls there is.  All visits to the island are during the ‘low water’ season, which usually begins in mid-July and goes through to the end of January.   High water visits are not possible as the island is continuously covered in the spray/downpour from the Falls.

Pick up is from the wooden jetty adjacent to the Royal Livingstone River Deck  by an aluminum boat launch with twin water jet propelled engines which then transfers guests on a 5 to 10 minute ride to the island. Drop off is again at the Royal Livingstone the trip. The trip includes a short guided tour of the island, viewing the Falls and a light snack depending on the time of the visit Morning visits.

Overnight: Islands of Siankaba

Indulge your inner adventurer with a night sleeping on an island in the middle of the Zambezi River, just 24 miles upstream from Victoria Falls.  Fall asleep to the lullaby of water lapping against the sandy shore at this luxury lodge for just twelve guests. The dining room, lounge, bar and swimming pool are located on the larger island. It is linked by suspension bridges and walkways in the tree canopy to the guest chalets on the smaller island overlooking the river towards the game reserve on the southern bank.

Seven uniquely designed chalets are constructed of teak and canvas tenting, and are raised well above ground levels in the tree canopy, with private balconies that extend over the river. They are linked by a winding overhead walkway, keeping guests safe and protecting the fragile riverine environment. All chalets have en suite bathrooms, mini bars, ceiling fans, mosquito nets and private safes.

Overnights at ISLANDS OF SIANKABA.

Includes: All meals, local brand drinks, scheduled lodge activities, return Livingstone Airport transfers and laundry.  Choice of activities include sundowner cruises, mokoro excursions, seasonal fishing, guided nature trail, island picnic lunch, nursery school and local village visit on foot or by mountain bike.  One trip per stay to either the Zambian or the Zimbabwean side of the Falls per stay – excludes Zimbabwe visa fee. Trip to Livingstone Island is included in the trip cost.
