Day 2: Dubrovnik walking tour – Afternoon Konavle tour

This morning, after leisure breakfast, meet your licensed English speaking guide and driver at the hotel lobby for a private 3 hour tour of Dubrovnik Old Town.

You will start at the Ploce Gate (East Gate) which is one of the two extremities of the walled city. As you descend down the stone steps of the fortification you will see the old Harbor Front of the city overlooking the Adriatic and the islands off the coast. As you continue, you will come to Dubrovnik’s Main Square of the Loggia Loza. It is situated at the eastern extremity of the Stradun, which runs through the walled city from East to West. The square is located in the heart of Dubrovnik, and is surrounded by its most important buildings.

You may visit the Church of St. Blaise with its distinctive baroque façade. Next door, you may step into the Rector’s Palace. The Rector was the highest authority in the city and his palace now houses the Museum of Dubrovnik. Over 15,000 works are on display documenting the economic and cultural history of the city.

Today your guide will also take you into the Dubrovnik Cathedral and its treasury famous for its ancient relics including a fragment of the cross on which it is believed that Jesus was crucified.

As you walk down the Stradun, your guide will deviate up a long flight of stairs to take you to the Dominican museum. Housed in the Dominican monastery, this is an absolute must for those interested in the Dubrovnik and Venetian schools of art. There are several paintings dating back to the 16th century including works by Titian.

After some free time for lunch, you will be met again by your guide for a continuing your tour with cable car to hill Srda and afternoon private wine tasting at Karaman’s winery.

Today you will have the chance to walk around the Dubrovnik City walls and have a Dubrovnik Sky Gondola cable car drive to hill Srd from which you can enjoy a breathtaking panorama view of the Old City and surrounding islands. The best views of Dubrovnik and the surrounding area are, without doubt, experienced from the top of the Srd Hill. The Dubrovnik Cable Car was built back in 1969 and was always enthusiastically used by more than 2.5 million visitors who wanted to enjoy the most beautiful panoramic views. On a clear day, you can see up to 60 km (37 miles). For this reason the neighbouring Imperial Fortress was strategically built on this privileged spot, back in the early 19th century.

Next, we will continue visiting Niko Karaman’s winery – Niko Karaman is a local enologist who is quickly making a name for his tiny operation based on the sumptuous dry wines and exquisite sweet Prošek he makes from the rare and indigenous Malvazija Dubrovacka. While listening to Niko’s presentation of Prošek production you will have the opportunity to enjoy the marvelous taste of his Prošek, dessert wine that was announced to be the world’s best desert wine in 2009.

Wondering around the world in persuit of a sanctuary on a well-indented rocky shore surrounded by a crystal clear sea, Beauty stopped and remained foreever on the Elafite islands. This picturesque string of islands in the vicinity of Dubrovnik scattered within the Deer Archipelago consists of 13 evergreen islands, islets and rocks. Situated between Dubrovnik, the island of Mljet and Peljesac Peninsula, and surrouned by the waters of the Kolocep and Mljet Channel, they were first mentioned as the Elafite Islands by Gaius Plinius Secundus Maior in his work Naturalis historia in the 1st centry A.D. Nature endowed these charming Mediterranean islands with lush subtropical vegetation, a mild climate, easily accessible coast and characteristic landscapes, whereas bygone centuries provided them with an architectural heritage.

A rarely preserved Mediterranean oasis, the island used to be the favourite out-of-town residences and place of leisure of the Dubrovnik aristocracy, buth they are also visited in the present time by those who wish to discover the prmeval beauty of luxuriant nature, as well as hidden and forgotten history.

Situated in the centre of the Elafite Archipelago the island of Lopud is among the finest examples of the preserved medieval architecture of the Dubrovnik region. The town of the same name was built in the northern sandy bay of the island, at the foot of the Polacica Hill slpes. The winding stone pathways through deserted olive groves and vineyards lead to the incredibly beautiful Sunj Bay with its glittering reddish sandy beach, where the sea is always calm, changing colour from gold to velvet dark blue.

Once in Lopud, you will get with your skipper on to a small gold-car vehicle to explore the island where the only road on the island will bring you to the beach of Sunj. Here, you may decide to have some swimming and sunbathing time. Later on you will continue with your skipper to Kolocep.

The small Elafite island of Kolocep, abounding in beauty and monuments, is situated close to the entrance of Gruz harbor. Two settlements Gronje and Donje Celo lie in secluded sandy coves in the shade of a centuries-old pine wood, reflecting in the azure Adriatic Sea.

Numerous paths and footways edged with stone walls and saturated with the intoxicating scent of aromatic Adriatic plants lead to the Kriz and Spasovo Brdo hills, as well as to the most distant corners of the island.

Aside from a nice walk, you may decide to have a late lunch here at the sea side Villa Ruza restaurant.

All that you need to take with you today is suncream, beach towels, swimmsuite and camera, as you will have some refreshment drinks onboard as well as snorkeling equipment.
