La Paz – Solitude and Seclusion
Instead of spending your first days in the capital city of San Jose, you will immediately escape into the seclusion that Costa Rica promises. La Paz is less than one hour from the country’s main international airport, and it will transport you into another world. After arriving at and settling in to your luxury lodge, you can wander to an organic coffee plantation. All the guest villas are tastefully spread out, so you will experience solitude and a place of privacy to unwind after your flight. Nothing specific will be planned for the day, but you will have a romantic welcome dinner served on your veranda.
Day 2 - 3
La Paz – Cacao Tasting and Volcano Day Trip
These two days will run at your pace as a private guide leads you around the local area. This way, you can choose to only explore in the afternoons or to mix up the activities based on how you feel. Poas is the country’s most active volcano, and you can ride in a 4WD vehicle to its summit, where steam escapes from the crater. You will not need to go hiking to enjoy its primitive beauty, but your guide can lead you on a short walk to a waterfall that plunges away from the volcano’s summit. On a private tour, you will follow the process from bean to cup before learning how to identify coffee during a special coffee cupping course.
Day 4 - 5
Puerto Viejo – Romantic Caribbean Getaway
The colors will change as you fly to Puerto Viejo for two days of Caribbean escapism. While the majority of visitors to Costa Rica stick to the more accessible beachside towns on the Pacific Coast, Puerto Viejo remains a mostly undiscovered gem. After a short flight, you can bathe in Caribbean waters with nobody else around before creating the only footprints on beaches of golden sand. These two days will be completely at your leisure. During these 48 hours, you can settle in to the country’s laid-back atmosphere.
Tortuguero National Park – Pure Caribbean Escapism
Today, you will make your way to Tortuguero National Park, where howler monkeys often send their boisterous calls through the trees. From your veranda, you will be able to hear the call of exotic birds, which will be a delightful way to wake up each morning. After your short flight, you will check into a small river lodge. Most of the Tortuguero beaches are inaccessible by road, so you will need to walk or take a boat to reach the sand. By staying on the river, you can be immersed in the wildlife world and still be within a short river ride to a breathtaking beach that very few others can access.
Tortuguero National Park – Sea Turtle Encounters
Today, you will have intimate encounters with sea turtles. Where you go is entirely dependent on the time of year. Different sea turtle species nest during different months, and conservationists are continually working to keep the sand clear. Therefore, today’s private tour will be flexible as your guide searches for the best local turtle encounters. These majestic animals can usually be seen from March to October and sometimes even later into the year. Snorkeling with sea turtles is another part of your tour. You can swim in the Caribbean and admire how these giants flap their way through the water.
Tortuguero National Park – Private Wildlife Cruise
Today, you will venture into the jungle interior on a private canal cruise that travels silently and slowly through the national park. Wildlife cruises are best during the morning and late afternoon, and your local guide will discuss different options with you. You can choose a 90-minute journey through the trees or a longer cruise that ends up on a small beach, where you can indulge in a picnic and lounge in the shade of the palms. These wildlife canal cruises are an iconic highlight of Tortuguero, and you can enjoy them each day you are here because your itinerary can be adjusted to be more active if desired.
Arenal Volcano National Park – Lounge in Thermal Baths
You can fly from Tortuguero to Arenal, saving half a day on the road and being able to savor the rich contrast in Costa Rican landscapes. As the Caribbean coastline fades away, you will soar alongside volcanoes and the country’s rich green interior. Eventually, you will touch down, and a local guide will explain your options for the next two days as you transfer to a boutique lodge beneath the shadow of Arenal Volcano. Hot springs are a famous highlight of this area. You will be staying at a lodge that is 20 minutes away from the popular tourist town of La Fortuna. Here, there are breathtaking Arenal views and trails that lead to hidden waterfalls.
Arenal Volcano National Park – Choosing Your Adventure
Today will be flexible, and you can create your own idea of adventure in the iconic Arenal Volcano National Park. Huffing and puffing, you can ascend to the mountain’s summit, where spectacular views and a rolling silence make the challenging trek worth the reward. For something more relaxing, there is a sky tram and skywalk that provide the opportunity to enjoy the views without needing to break a sweat. Ziplining is famous in Costa Rica, and some of the country’s highest lines are located in this national park.
Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve – Immersed in the Cloud Forest
By traveling to Monteverde, you will cross Lake Arenal on a private boat that may feel more like a cruise than a mode of transport. On the other side, you will ascend on narrow and winding roads. Your destination is entirely tucked away from the world and occupies the northern side of Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. It is a charming lodge that will help to provide seclusion in the country’s most famous cloud forest destination. After checking in to your lodge, your guide will provide you with a map, and you can spend the afternoon strolling through the trees.
