Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Chirripo Mountains – Arrive in San Jose and Travel to your Mountain Resort

Costa Rica offers a blend of relaxation, rejuvenation, and activity for a beautifully balanced experience. In San Jose, the Central Market brims with fresh produce recently harvested at the peak of ripeness while the aromas of watermelon, mango, and pineapple drift through the aisles along the center of the 19th-century donut-shaped edifice. Small restaurants known as sodas offer locals traditional delicacies, highlighting the customary dish of gallo pinto, rice and beans. Your private transfer greets you at Juan Santamaria International Airport upon your arrival.

Drive along the winding, scenic roads leading you away from the Central Valley and your driver points out the lower ridges to the west where the coffee plantations grow to over 5,575 feet above sea level. Fluffy clouds speckle the sky and pass over the volcanic chain along the northern edges of the San Jose. You soon reach the comforts of your secluded mountain lodge nestled into the peak of Cerro Chirripo, the highest mountain in Costa Rica at over 12,500 feet above sea level. The cool air offers a refreshing contrast to the tropical warmth of the Central Valley while the scent of pine drifts through the trees. Your lodge offers an enchanting spirit of Costa Rica surrounded by the flowers and gripping wildlife of the highlands paying particular attention to the ecological footprint of visitors and locals alike.

The river trickles along the banks, passing near the edges of the lodge in view of your peaceful room. Orchids thrive in the unique biosphere, blossoming in the shade of the forest canopy. Butterflies land on the blooming petals and sip the nectar from the pistils. Your introduction to the lodge and Costa Rica culminates with a meal using locally sourced ingredients. The concierge greets you with a juice made from fresh strawberries, pineapple, and ice as the scent of brewing herbal tea adds to the fruity aroma in the lobby, offering a soothing scent into which you easily settle.

Day 2: Chirripo Mountains – Relish Two Yoga Classes and Walk to Hot Springs

Before breakfast, you take to the yoga studio for your first class in comfort of the mountains. The peaceful ambiance welcomes you to your practice in Costa Rica. The passing clouds leave moisture in the trees before burning away in the bright sun of the highlands as your instructor leads you through a restorative class. The studio has a view of the rolling ridges and emerald canopy around the lodge, and the pleasant, cool atmosphere accentuates the mystical ambiance. You connect to your breathing, feeling your tight muscles rejuvenate over time as you move into Ananda Balasana, the Happy Baby Pose.

After yoga, your guide greets you in the lobby ready to lead you through the landscape on a trekking and hot springs excursion. The trails wind through the rugged Cerro Chirripo National Park with nearly 200 square miles of protected landscape. Waterfalls trundle down the rocks and through the trees, filling the clear turquoise pools connecting to the rivers. The dew heightens the pine aroma of the pine scent leading to the hot springs while the translucent pools glow indigo against the framing white rocks and jade canopy at San Gerardo de Rivas. The warm, naturally heated water causes steam to rise in the cool mountain air. An opening gushes with the hot water, allowing your muscles to open and relax amidst the incredible scenery.

Day 3: Chirripo Mountains – Enjoy Yoga and Discover a Fascinating Forest Canopy

After sunrise, you return to the yoga studio for a fantastic class indulging in the swift movements of Vinyasa Flow. You connect to your breath as the clouds pass through the trees outside the lodge as the aromas of jasmine and pine drift in the air. You move from the Downward-Facing Dog into the Revolved Reverse Warrior, acknowledging where you are in the world and in your life. At breakfast, you crave the juicy watermelon and sweet pineapple decorating your plate in the dining room. Your guide greets you in the lobby keen on leading you on the exploration of your choice within the jungle landscape.

You can take to the waters of the Savegre River on a rafting excursion or keep your eyes glued to the trees in search of the rare birds nesting in the diverse landscape. For a unique, culinary experience you choose to explore the flavors of Costa Rica, beginning at a chocolate factory run by a local family. In moderation, dark chocolate has been proven to be good for both body and mind, helping to recall memory, along with quickening the metabolism. Your guide leads you through the plantation where large pods dangle from the low-lying trees, and you can rub your fingers over the smooth ridges and indentations wondering where the familiar seeds could be.

You listen to the history and evolution of chocolate, from the hidden corners of the Amazon jungle in Brazil and leading to Spanish royalty in the 16th century. Costa Rica produces delicious organic, fair-trade chocolate alongside other Central and South American countries in competition with developing African nations. Your guide opens the pod to reveal the beans before showing how to roast the previously dried crop in order to release the rich oils. He grinds the cacao and adds a small amount of sugar, offering you a taste of the newly produced chocolate on a spoon. The smooth, silky texture gives way to a decadent sweetness of 70 percent pure cacao.

Day 4: Osa Peninsula – Explore and Experience the Landscape on a Scenic Drive

You indulge in an early morning yoga session, practicing Iyengar to focus on your body alignment during each pose. Your instructor helps position you with blocks, blankets, and ropes for a more effective range of motion. After moving with Vinyasa for so long, it becomes difficult to hold each pose for a long period of time but ends with the same appreciation for your practice and a sense of rejuvenating accomplishment. Your private transfer greets you at the hotel and escorts you south towards Osa Peninsula.

En route you stop near Uvita Beach to explore the splendors of Marino Ballena National Park, which encompasses more than 13,600 acres of forest, beach, and ocean reserve. The coastline resembles a whale’s tale where two beaches converge daily during low tide. It is also a great place to view traveling humpback whales between December and April. The tropical heat swirls over the golden sands along the shoreline. You board a boat and set out onto the water, enjoying the refreshing mist spouting from the hull of the boat.

The sea breeze carries a sticky saline quality causing salt crystals to form on your cheeks and bare shoulders. The calm Pacific Ocean shimmers with turquoise and indigo hues along the more than nine miles of protected sand and mangrove trees filling the shore. Your skipper points to a turtle poking its head out of the water, as Olive Ridley and Hawksbill turtles nest on the sands during mating season, always returning to their place of birth. A humpback whale breaches the water with its large frame reaching 46 feet long and splashing down into the water causing the sea spray to hit the sides of your boat.

Day 5: Osa Peninsula – Delight in Morning Yoga and Choose your Daily Excursion

In the morning, your instructor welcomes you to the stunning coastline of the Osa Peninsula with a unique challenge of participating in Ashtanga, which includes a series of six poses in a specific sequence, designed to build internal heat through your breath and focus. By holding each pose and breathing, you perfect your practice through the routine. The tropical warmth drifts through the open walls of the studio, carrying the sounds of the Pacific Ocean splashing against the tan sand.

For a new exploration of the water and the coast, you take to the shores with your instructor to learn the art of paddle boarding. Before stepping into the lulls of the sea, you practice your stance on the comfort of dry land. You bend the knees and stand perpendicular to the ends of the board. You grip your paddle with one hand knuckling the crown and one palm wrapped around the lower sides of the oar. You get comfortable in the warm sun and take to the water as your balance is tested even in the calm wake.

You stand and flex your core, following the instructions of your guide by paddling along both sides of your board as to not travel in a circle. The water drips down the edges of the paddle and touches your toes, offering a refreshing alternative to the warm light. You feel comfortable and can look around at the remarkable scenery at the edge of the Osa Peninsula, basking in the turquoise water, with the sunlight causing the beach to glow gold.

Day 6: Osa Peninsula – Perform Sun Salutations and Snorkel or Horseback Ride

You accept the challenge of a Kundalini instruction in the morning, using the repetition of physical exercise and intense breath work to reach a meditative state. You instructor supports you through their encouragement of pushing through the internal barriers to find a higher state of self-awareness. While holding your poses, you feel a surprising and welcome energy in the refreshing breeze pouring through the open walls of the studio. At breakfast, you revitalize your body with ripe mango accompanied by freshly brewed coffee cultivated in the celebrated region of Tarrazu. After the meal, you choose to return to the water with a snorkeling excursion around Osa Peninsula and the edges of Golfo Dulce, one of the few tropical fjords in the world.

You step onto the boat basking in the cool sea breeze drifting over the hull. The clear, turquoise sea glistens around you and sweeps across the coastline on the bays and inlets. The unique ecosystem fosters sea turtles and super-pods of spinner dolphins reaching up to 200 members. The boat docks and you dive into the water with your snorkel gear with the view of the spinner dolphins nearby. From beneath the sea, you can watch the dolphins moving elegantly within their group. Occasionally, they leap from the water, arching into the air before splashing back down in a demonstration of their agility and playfulness.

Day 7: Osa Peninsula – Relax on the Shores of Osa Peninsula at your Leisure

Your final morning yoga class begins with Yin Yoga, which is meant to balance body and mind through a series of poses held for several minutes at a time. The meditative practice targets the deeper connective tissue to restore length and elasticity while promoting balance. Your muscles engage as your mind clears with your breathing pattern. After breakfast, your guide escorts you to the trails of Corcovado National Park, which covers nearly 165 square miles of one of the world’s most bio-diverse regions.

The tropical heat permeates the canopy, blending with the humidity cast by rainfall and the nearby ocean. Mangrove trees frame the swamps, and white-headed capuchin monkeys scramble through the trees. Your guide leads you along the trail in search of the brilliant wildlife for an unforgettable connection to the land, sea, and spirit of Costa Rica. The scent of the sea fades beneath the aroma of woody vines as your guide points to the tracks of the rare Baird’s Tapir, followed closely by the elusive jaguar. Red-backed squirrel monkeys hide in the treetops.

As you follow the path, your guide becomes increasingly excited and follows the long, loud call of a nearby bird and points into the emerald leaves where a scarlet macaw graces on nuts. You learn how rare it is to see the vibrant red feathers and bright blue, green, and yellow plumage on the wings as they resemble tropical flowers amongst the branches. Corcovado National Park has the largest concentration of scarlet macaws in all of Central America.

In the morning, you practice your own yoga separate from the studio, enjoying the sounds of the ocean from the comfort of your private balcony. At breakfast, you sip freshly made juice from strawberries and papaya. The scent of coffee drifts through the dining room. You watch the sunlight wash over the greenery as the breeze rustles the nearby palm trees. You have grown accustomed to the slower pace of life between the mountains and the beach that turned your retreat into a relaxing Costa Rica vacation. After the meal, your private transfer greets you at your resort and leads you to Drake Bay Airport where you check in to your flight home.
