Vanuatu, formerly known as the New Hebrides, is a Y-shaped archipelago of 83 islands located 500 miles west of Fiji, between New Caledonia and the Solomon Islands. On arrival in Port Vila you will be transferred to your hotel for a two-night stay. While here, your itinerary includes a tour of Port Vila. Fly to Tanna for two nights. Drive to within 10 minutes of the top of the crater, via Lake Siwi and the ash plain. Watch the lava erupting (wear old clothes and sensible footwear; we also recommend bandanas, as there is a strong sulphurous smell). The villages are primitive and fascinating (the roads are unsealed). Return to Port Vila for 1 night before transferring to the airport.
