As Danny says, the best is to stick with Credit Cards and ATMs as they are widely accepted in most places. Just make sure you don't carry more cash that is needed on your body.

In the major travel centres and cities, credit cards are widely accepted. In more rural areas and when tipping (normally 10%) other than restaurants, guides etc then SA Rand in small denominations would be best.
