The four of us are thinking of renting a car with a driver. no guide? I would like to have a driver for about 8-10 hours: pick up: cruise terminal in Kobe. Is this possible?

For what it's worth, while
For what it's worth, while there are plenty of great mainstream places to see in Osaka/Kobe (don't try to see it all in a day -- it can't be done) the most remarkable places are in nearby Kyoto. While Kyoto is easily accessible by train and many sites are within walking distance of the main Kyoto train station your best option is to hire a car and spend the day enjoying the sites of Kyoto many of which are only accessible by car.
Just for a price
Just for a price range:
Osaka Taxi: 660 for teh first 2km, 80 for each consequitive 273m
SIGHTSEEING TAXI, driver speaks Japanese: 3 hours 12840, 5 hrs 21400, 6 hours 25680
Yes, taxis are quite pricey
Yes, taxis are quite pricey in Kobe/Osaka. At least 500 yen (about 3 euros) just to enter one. It might be worth it for short hops to sightseeing points in Osaka or Kobe (similar expense to 4 train/subway tickets)
Renting a car & driver for 8-10 hours is possible, but it would cost you. However, it should be pretty easy to hire a driver for a day.
