Unforgettable Memories: Christmas Markets in Germany
Gary Herod from Archer Travel is one of Zicasso’s gifted Travel Experts on Europe. His invaluable advice inspired some unique Holiday Adventures to the Christmas Markets in Germany. Gary shares with us some of his favorite memories from visiting the Christmas Markets over three different years during the holidays.
Where
We went to markets in Frankfurt, Nuremburg, Rothenburg, and Munich. This was always done during the first two weeks of December. The weather was always crisp, with light snow. The Christmas lights against a background of snow is very beautiful.
Munich – Marienplatz Christmas Lights
Christmasy Aromas
In the evenings, you could smell the aroma of roasted chestnuts, or of soups only found in that part of the world. Freshly cooked sausages were the best. Also, the smell of fresh pastries of all kinds. Various kinds of warm beverages.
Shopping
The quality of the merchandise is always the best, much of it hand made. Wood carvings, hand made sweaters and other Christmas clothing, unusual Christmas ornaments, and Christmas dinnerware. Clocks with Christmas music.

Christmas Spirit and Music
The vendors are always pleasant and helpful to visitors to the market. In the background you hear a choir singing Christmas carols in front of a church on the same square as the market.
Memories
What meant the most to us was that it brought back memories of our youth, especially if we were raised in a cold climate where we had snow. Or, if we were not that lucky, memories of stories we read of places with snow.
Nuremberg Christmas Market
Our children always looked forward to the gifts we brought home, clothing, gingerbread, ornaments for their trees, toys made in Germany and Switzerland.
