Auckland at Dusk
Vacations to New Zealand should include a stop at Auckland, the largest city in the country. Situated on a sprawling isthmus which sits between the Manukau and Waitemata Harbors, the people of this land have dubbed Auckland the City of Sails. Not only will you find plenty of water and waterborne activities here, but you will also appreciate the land covered in thick rain forest and dotted with dormant volcanic peaks, as well as a plethora of tropical paradise islands.
As you roam around Auckland, take photos of the amazing Sky Tower, the tallest in the Southern Hemisphere, or catch amazing views from the center of the Auckland Harbor Bridge which offers bungee jumping if you dare!
Visit the Howick Historical Village and get a taste of life from the mid to late 1800s, and take a ride on a genuine steam locomotive from the Glenbrook Vintage Railway Station. Also, take time to wander through the remarkable New Zealand National Maritime Museum, Museum of Transport and Technology, or the Auckland War Memorial Museum.
Hit the waterways of Auckland and bask in the beauty of the surrounding sea with visits to Rangitoto Island, or Waiheke Island where you can laze on a sun kissed beach, walk a jungle trail, or dine on delicious wines while indulging in olive tasting. Charter a private yacht cruise around Waitemata Harbor, climb on board and race an American Cup yacht, launch away on a peaceful ferry ride, or strike out on a dolphin and whale watching expedition. Venture to the Wild West coast some 40 minutes from Auckland and stretch out on black sand beaches.
Head inland and explore the volcanic summits of Mt Eden (Maungawhau) and One Tree Hill (Maungakiekie). Various difficulties of trails provide everyone with adventurous bush walks through hills blanketed in lush rain forest. Before heading out, explore both native and international beasts at the Auckland Zoo.
