Located in the Rift Valley and nestled in the middle of Lake Nakuru National Park, Lake Nakuru’s waters lap at the shores of a small town of the same name. Lake Nakuru is only 160 kilometers away from Nairobi, making it a pleasant day trip from Kenya’s largest city and a nice addition to your Kenya safari vacation.
Lake Nakuru is home to one of the most diverse bird populations on earth and is famous for its massive flocks of pink flamingoes that can easily reach between one and two million birds. Because the lake is shallow and warm, algae grows in abundance in its waters and the flamingoes and other waterfowl, like cormorants, ducks, avocets and pelicans, come by the droves to feast on it.
The National Park surrounding Lake Nakuru has recently been enlarged to accommodate herds of black rhino which enjoy living within the park’s borders. Over 25 of the endangered beasts now call Lake Nakuru National Park home, so catching a glimpse of one is likely. Other African wildlife can be seen throughout the park, such as waterbucks, Rothschild giraffes and the leopards and lions which prey on them. There are also numerous giant pythons which can often be seen hanging from tree limbs, or crossing roads.
